Sports & Recreation Coded (?)

Sorry about delays, Friday was my birthday & I did some things with family this weekend...but here's this.

I think this is pretty-much done, guys. Feel free to correct me, of course. Copy may need polishing, as I did hack it down to fit in tight space of the tables I used for layout. I guess I could have done absolute positioning, but I won't be introduced to that until the next Javascript workshop on Friday. And I do need to send out an acknowledgment email to all of the flickr photographers (whose work I utilized from Creative Commons) so that they know their work has be used in a non-profit project. And we'll see what kind of attribution they want...hopefully a thank you is sufficient.

Tried out the map in the bottom left corner of the Day Trip pages...what do we think? Also used that wee bit of javascript to make small windows to outside links & the larger map Jeff posted last night (from the homepage). Adjusted the pop-up window-size to account for size of the map.

Also, Neighborhoods. *sigh* I'll be cranking out that copy tommorow. I wonder if Tayler & I can't meet with the photographer & go over the Powerpoint of "feels like this" images that I sent Tayler on Wednesday. See what he has & what needs to be shot. And by whom. And by when. I took the Whipple Creek larger image last Friday when I popped out there to take pics for thirty minutes--think it's okay?

Speaking of which, I do have the two CDs from Vidinghoff (check the new header images...on which I'll take any feedback, by the by); let me know how/when you'd like to receive the CDs, Jeff, & I can drive them to you. I wasn't planning on leaving my house tomorrow, but I don't mind meeting someplace like campus or somewhere.

Cropped Pop-Up

I think this isolates the area a little more, but either way. I can always adjust to our liking.

Revised Pop-Up Map

Here's the large pop-up map. Let me know what you all think. I feel like it could almost do without California and Nevada showing, but didn't know if we should keep it this way or not.

I'm still having no luck with the aerial/satellite view of Clark County. Bryce mentioned an atlas, but I think copyright issues would still apply. He also thought maybe one of our contacts might possibly have something similar, I don't know.

Contextual Map Inspiration

Hey guys, I was clicking around realty sites (I'll be getting in touch with RMLS, a realtor association focusing on counties in N. Oregon and S. Washington), when I came across the Clark Country Chamber of Commerce site and saw their map --

--and I thought it could be tweaked to use for our context map really well. Just imagine the other county delineations arn't there, include Oregon, Pacific Ocean, mountain ranges, and then do the "blow-up" effect to make Clark County bigger somewhere where there isn't much else happening, like in central Oregon.

Thursday, March 12th Class Notes

On Thursday we worked on finalizing the Parks and Rec section. The section will have three tertiary pages: Parks and Trails, Recreation, and Day Trips. The layout of the parks and trails and day trips pages will be image driven with text that appears when images are scrolled over. The whole layout will sit on top of the green layer shown in Jeff's design. When the mouse isn't scrolled on any image, directions for scrolling and links will be present.

Ryan will send Bryce all the information he has gathered and Bryce will finalize the copy. Ryan will be sending the images for his page to Emily and Bryce will send Emily the copy. Emily will have the pages coded by next Friday (20th) for review by Gregg and Ed. Fortunately, we have two weeks to continue finalizing any image issues or to add more content if needed before the final deadline (April 3rd).

After spring break, we will begin working with Emily on the neighborhoods section. When I was working with Ryan I asked him to provide a basic mockup of how he wanted the layout to work and also think about his image requirements (how many per page, which ones do we have vs. needing Ed's photos) and what links he needed to provide. I know you'll be busy doing the coding for parks and rec, but please try to give these items some thought over the break. You've already created the google map, so I'd start by thinking about how we are going to incorporate the map into the layout and whether or not we want to transfer the map into photoshop. I think Ryan could do this without too much effort? Just some ideas....

Some other items in the works....
1. Flash slideshow
Did you ever receive the final images from Ed?
2. Picking images for the header
Still haven't finalized these yet. I'm hoping that we can all try and take some photos over the break, weather permitting, and get some good options that way.
3. Pop-up map.
Ryan had started this piece. It might be a good idea to pick this back up and change some of the colors so they match better with the chosen design. Ryan or Eija - let me know if either of you are interested in taking this on.
4. 'About the Design' Section (Footer)
Dene said she is fine with us reusing the DTC information on the CREDC site. One page down!
5. Website running on the test server - Check it out!

Picture Files

These are the image files that Jeff mentioned in his email, but they're listed here as Ed has them on his computer. If these are the final images chosen for the slideshow, then maybe Tayler can email Ed V. with this information so he can begin touching up the files and deliver final photos to Jeff.

I made the little test slideshow in flash by just dropping in different images in the timeline. Then I added a new layer and added an action script to have the slide show run automatically. I did that by going to the Action Window using the Script Assist to add a new item in Global Functions, then Timeline Control, then selecting Play (to make it play automatically). Script Assist is really useful because it will help you write basic action scripts for flash. After that I exported it as a .swf file.

Some of the problems I had with the Flash slideshow were that I couldn't figure out how to make the background transparent--- if the 'river' is in the background, I think it might need to be in the background of the flash file. I wasn't successful at making transitions between the images, I don't know how you want the slideshow images to transition, but I was pretty bad at that.

Pics from Seaside

These were e-mailed to me this morning to use on the day trip page for Seaside. I thought we could use one with some text, or something.

Thursday Notes and Actions Items

Notes
  • Logo will be flush against the menu bar; Photos in the header will have padding around them
  • Want to play around with the font on the menu bar, for now make menu items in all caps
  • Discussed changing map link, for now make smaller to make room for quick facts (map link will open a pop-up window)
  • Discussed changing color of the quick facts box --> Possibly to correlate with the colors in the images we select for the header?
  • Plan to make basic links in the footer for about, dtc, site map, etc.
  • Change direction of the blue curve in the logo to mimic 'river' shape
Decision to swap Parks & Rec with Arts & Culture on the schedule to give Jeff time to select images and work with Emily to wrap up the design. Work on the Parks & Rec content will begin on Tuesday. Emily will attend the usability workshop (?) and the rest of us will meet to work with Ryan on the content.

Action Items

Emily: code basics of the website (it is OK if we don't have final images or the slideshow, just use placeholders)

Jeff (Lots for you!)
  • Think about the notes I mentioned above and make changes as necessary
  • Determine how many photos you will need for the slideshow (9, 12?) and select the ones you'd like to you from the images available on the blog.
  • Determine the two images you'd like to use for the header. We decided to use on that shows people 'living' and one that gives an idea what the landscape looks like here.
  • If the images we have from Ed are lacking in some way, let me know which shots you'd like to use and what they are missing (contrast, snow, etc) and I can work with Ed to see if he can take new shots or see if he has anything else in his stock collection.
  • I'd like to send Ed the final selection by Tuesday.
  • Let me know if you are able to do the slideshow so I can get back with Dene about that.
Ryan
  • Prepare for a working session on Tuesday for the Parks and Rec session.
  • Come with photos and copy for the different parks and trails you want to feature.
  • Make a shot list of images that you may need (i.e. tennis center, firstenburg, etc)
  • Make a list of links that are relevant to your section so we can discuss where those will logically fit in. We had thought we would just link the text in the copy...
  • Think about how the layout will work (map with pop-ups icons? or text surround by wrapped images?) and what our final pages will be (we had discussed combing sports and possibly parks and trails)
If I missed anything, please feel free to comment to the post. Have a great weekend everyone! ~ Tayler

Congratulations and some ideas for moving forward...

Great job today at the presentation and special congrats to Jeff on having your design selected!

Some comments I made note of...
Ed and Gregg requested that we pick new photos for the two header images. Also, Gregg is going to get back to us with the 'quick facts' they want to see on the home page. Everyone liked colors Jeff used and they thought that the text was more readable on the green background. Gregg and others requested to be included in reviewing our web pages as we approach each deadline. I'm going to start thinking of ways to review 'drafts' that look like the website, even though it won't be up yet...any ideas would be very appreciated!

Next steps...
We really need to get a handle on our photography needs. I proposed to Ed Vidinghoff that we would be able to have the home page final selection prior to March 10th (I'm thinking within a week though) and we will have a finalized list for each subsection 1 week prior to the draft deadline. If new photos need to be taken, we can always use a placeholder image while we wait to Ed to take the shots and get back to us with them.

Coding for the website layout. Jeff - Now is the time to start giving your image files to Emily so she can start planning for coding the basic structure of the website.

Research, research, research. Now that we know which design we are going with, I think each of us can start planning out the layouts for our sub-pages, drafting copy, and making a list of necessary images.

We can talk more about all these things on Thursday. For now, enjoy some much deserved rest!

nw map

If I remember correctly, Tayler asked to maybe have a little map that shows where Clark County is to relation to the state, oregon, and stuff. I made a map in Photoshop, it's a little cartoony. Not sure if this works or not, it might be able to be a small image somewhere just to give a little overview of where we are.
Looking at the map again, I need to make the Clark County words bigger, and over some. So they don't get lost where they are at.

This is a new version, after hearing some comments I made some changes.
